The first line in "Grapes of Wrath" talks about the earth. Steinbeck describes the red, dry earth made up of dust. Throughout the story the dust follows, and the earth is a constant dry red. In the story Tom and his family constantly yeild to nature harsh power. In Teresea Neptune's "3 on Dunes" thre reality that mother nature is beautiful but deadly is revealed. The sandy dunes tower over three wanderers and provide endless heat on confusion. Tom and his family survive their adventures on Route 66 and in "Saguaro Triad" it is shown that some life remains in the desert.
